Songwriting Defined

March 6, 2006

One of the very best definitions of songwriting I have ever heard, as related by  Mark Steyn:

"Words make you think a thought. Music makes you feel a feeling. A song makes you feel a thought."

This is even more appropriate for those who would write songs intended for corporate worship. Too often our contemporary worship songs mask the superficial use of Biblical language with emotionally manipulative melodies. How often it is preached that faith is a decision, only to sing that faith is a feeling! in the end, our range of emotions as well as our theological depth is circumscribed to that of a teenager. Like so much else in our culture.
