Goodbye, Bag of Crap: Zarqawi terminated and an odd coincidence

June 8, 2006

Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, “superstar of international jihad” is dead. This is terrific news. He was responsible for the death of thousands, many by the inhumanely barbaric method of beheading, and has inspired tens of thousands of imitators around the globe.

In an odd coincidence, we recently cancelled our Dy-Dee Diaper service, and the last load of dirty diapers were dispatched today with little ceremony.

Coincidence or sign? I retort, you deride.

Excellent round-up and Insty, a must read. Don’t get too excited, it’s not all over yet. Yet it’s certainly more than a “symbolic” victory. In a war of images, this one is quite valuable. As Austin Bay says, it’s a political victory, not necessarily a military one. The timing of this hit may be connected to the confirmation of the final three Iraqi ministers of ministers of defense, interior and national security.

Minutes after the Zarqawi’s death was announced, the long-debated
posts of interior minister, defense minister and national security
adviser were filled in a giddy session of parliament. Abdul Qadir
Muhammed Jassim, a Sunni Arab and former Iraqi army commander, was
named defense minister, Jawad al-Bolani, a Shiite, was put in charge of
the interior ministry and Sherwan Alwaeli, a Kurd, was named the
country’s top official for national security. Bolani, unlike his
predecessor, Bayan Jabr, is not affiliated with Shiite militias.

What is particularly encouraging is that the intel that led to this lead almost certainly came from Iraqis close to Zarqawi. That change of sentiment could mean that the tide has turned against al-Queda in Iraq. Only time will tell. For now, I’m glad that pieces be on his head.
