Democratic Extremism

June 15, 2006

David Smith of Contraian Views sends a link to this Liberal-turned-away story Why I Left The Left:

What Democrat could support Al Gore’s ’04 choice for President, Howard Dean, when Dean didn’t dismiss the suggestion that George W. Bush had something to do with the 9/11 attacks? Or when the second most powerful Senate Democrat, Dick Durbin, thought our behavior at the detention center in Guantanamo was equivalent to Bergen Belsen and the Soviet gulags? Or when Senator Kennedy equated the unfortunate but small incident at Abu Ghraib with Saddam’s 40-year record of mass murder, rape rooms, and mass graves saying, "Saddam’s torture chambers have reopened under new management, U.S. management"? What Democrat could not applaud the fact that President had, in fact, kept us safe for what’s going on 5 years? What Democrat – even those who opposed the decision to go into Iraq – wouldn’t applaud the fact that tens of millions of previously brutalized people had the hope of freedom before them?

This is a good example of why I fail to get too worked up over the likes of Ann Coulter (either way- I tend to ignore her). She may say some harsh things and sell a lot of books, but she is not an elected official of a major party.

Liberals are outraged over her hyperbole, but they tend to applaud the even worse statements delivered by the very leadership of their party.

A few months ago I was laid up in the hospital recovering from a kidney stone operation. I was drugged up but still in a lot of pain. My thoughts, as they often do, turned to the war, specifically of the injured soldiers with actual wounds that would heal but leave them disfigured and/or disabled for life. I can’t remember if I was actually watching CNN or if the thought of these kinds of statments simply started coming to mind, but I can tell you it upset me greatly to to the point of tears imagining what an injured service person might feel hearing the ugly rhetoric and defeatism coming from the Democrats.

No concern for them from the Left though. Just divisive partisan spin with no regard for our troops- often delivered through the guise of compassion and "let’s bring them home." It’s not what the troops want, and it’s not what this country needs. That doesn’t justify Coulter’s rhetoric, but it makes the outrage seem selective to these pointy ears.
