Barack Obama: Lightweight or Lightworker?

Here’s where this San Francisco Chronicle writer comes down on the debate:

Many spiritually advanced people I know (not coweringly religious, mind you, but deeply spiritual) identify Obama as a Lightworker, that rare kind of attuned being who has the ability to lead us not merely to new foreign policies or health care plans or whatnot, but who can actually help usher in a new way of being on the planet, of relating and connecting and engaging with this bizarre earthly experiment. These kinds of people actually help us evolve. They are philosophers and peacemakers of a very high order, and they speak not just to reason or emotion, but to the soul.

Just replace Obama with George W. Bush and you’ll understand how preposterous this sentiment sounds in my ears.

It seems to me that after years of labeling Bush supporters as some kind of cult, Obama supporters- or at least some of them- are signaling that it’s not the cult that’s the problem, but who it is devoted to. I’d say there’s a good amount of projection in the mix as well. Conservatives had their Reagan. But so far there has been no liberal equivalent. The longing for one must be quite intense.

Indeed, who could be cultishly devoted to Bush? Was it the fiery rhetoric? The brilliant oratory? The masterful media manipulation? The idea is preposterous. Even among his supporters, the man is always supported in the most qualified fashion. What Bush has done, however ineptly or haltingly, is continue to promulgate American values in a very difficult set of circumstances (some of his own making – see the endless qualifications and backhanded compliments). There is perhaps a cultish element in that devotion as is pointed out regularly at Rob’s Gaffe, but that’s not about the man George Bush. One of the things I hope that happens in this election cycle is that we get past always making every problem about the man George Bush and about formulating our values as Americans in a post 9/11 world.

It seems that some people ar making him out to be a Messiah. I think all voters should realize that they are simply electing a human being not a savior who will right all wrongs. I think some people have so overly berated the current President that they see their candidate ushering in a new dawn (age). I like Obama as a person, I’m wondering if anyone can measure up to what people are projecting upon him.
